Chapter 40 Being Targeted
Chapter 40 Being Targeted
Silent swamp.
Forgotten Station, a place crisscrossed by towns and trade routes, is a place full of both gold and risk.
This is the last stop before entering the swamp.
A large number of caravans gathered here.
Go further in, and you'll encounter a large number of monsters and poisonous gas.
Only magicians or mercenaries who are looking for materials would enter that place.
Dorothy jumped off the train.
clang~
The greatsword on his back hit the ground with a thud.
Sniff.
As soon as Dorothy arrived, she smelled a faint stench of decay in the air.
This must have drifted over from the swamp.
Elor took out three bottles of potion.
"This is an antidote. Although the toxins are less concentrated in the air here, it's just in case."
Dorothy nodded.
He took the bottle of medicine and drank it all in one gulp.
He smacked his lips.
"It's sweet."
Elor and Lyons also drank the potion.
Elor suggested, "How about we go to the Mercenary Guild and see what missions we can take on?"
Dorothy nodded and said, "Okay."
The three-person team found the mercenary guild here.
The mission will definitely be accepted by Elor, since she has the highest mercenary rank.
She also became the captain of this squad.
Pushing open the doors of the Mercenary Guild, you're immediately greeted by a cacophony of noise and the smell of alcohol.
Elor walked toward the quest board.
"My level is Black Iron, which allows me to take on combat quests related to monsters. This way, I can sell everything from magic cores to animal hides for money right here."
When the three of them arrived at the quest board, Elor, who had been confidently planning to choose a quest, was dumbfounded.
Because it's the lowest-level quest, the Black Iron quest only allows you to collect materials.
"Why?! It's not like this in other places."
Leons stood to the side and said calmly, "Because this is the Silent Swamp, a very dangerous place."
Leonce pointed to the task board.
"Black Iron quests correspond to novice mages, the lowest level here, which is related to combat, is Red Copper quests, which correspond to intermediate mages, and Silver quests correspond to advanced mages."
"This means the swamp is very dangerous, containing dangers that require a high-level mage to handle."
Then Leona looked at Dorothy and Elor.
Of the three, only Leona is a high-level mage.
However, Leona had just registered as a mercenary.
There is no magicians' guild here.
Therefore, they cannot accept missions here.
Elor said with some regret, "Then I'll just have to earn one less commission."
Dorothy, however, had other issues to consider.
Her gaze remained fixed on the task board in front of her.
Above Silver, there are two more mission levels.
This means that the danger level in the Silent Swamp is two levels higher than that of a high-level mage!
This made Dorothy frown slightly.
This also served as a reminder to Dorothy that she should not go deep into the swamp.
Dorothy glanced at her panel.
Fireball LV20 (1/200)
It took a full level 20 fireball spell to give her a little sense of security.
"Since we can't accept the quest, let's just wander around and see if we can find some valuable herbs or some less dangerous monsters to fight," Dorothy said.
She looked at Elor and Leonce.
After all, the main reason for this trip was that Dorothy was short of money.
She was poor.
Dorothy didn't want to take any risks.
"Let's go, let's check out the swamp first."
Just as Dorothy finished speaking and turned to leave...
"Hi, three beautiful and confused ladies, it looks like you need help."
Da da da.
The boots made a crisp sound as they stepped on the ground.
A mercenary with long, red hair stood up from the corner.
The other person had a beauty mark under his eye, with a thin scar below it. The scar didn't detract from his handsomeness; instead, it added a touch of roguish charm, and he was well aware of his appeal.
He approached the three of them with a confident smile.
Dorothy didn't even look at the mercenary approaching, and strode towards the door.
"Elor, Lyons, let's go."
Elor immediately followed.
Leonse glanced at the mercenary and followed Elor.
"Tsk!" The mercenary clicked his tongue in annoyance as he watched the three girls leave.
Then he heard mocking laughter behind him.
"Hahaha, Wolf, I told you this trick wouldn't work forever. This is your third failed attempt to pick up a girl today. Now you owe me thirty gold coins."
Wolf looked at his companion who was making fun of him with a gloomy face.
He was a man with a full beard and a hideous scar on his neck.
The injury on his neck gave his laughter and speech a rough, abrasive quality.
"Ha, they've come back to beg me. Let's go, brother, and get our thirty gold coins now."
The bearded man, who had been laughing heartily, stopped laughing, stood up, and picked up the giant axe lying in the corner.
"Walk."
Wolf reached into his pocket and took out a small bottle.
Inside the bottle lay an insect with all its legs curled up.
As Wolf shook the bottle, the insect was startled awake. It crawled around inside the bottle, eventually stopping, its carapace opening, and its wings fluttering.
Wolf gave a cruel smile and licked his lips.
"The message has been sent out. The three top-quality prey we just discovered can fetch a good price."
"This swamp is full of traps for young birds."
……
As Dorothy walked out of the mercenary guild, her habits and mindset from her previous life told her that the red-haired rascal had ill intentions.
Furthermore, Dorothy has a strong opinion about mercenaries.
There was no other reason than that Elor had been betrayed in the past.
When faced with a dangerous situation, the cunning mercenary chose to betray his teammates when they entered the Giant Spider Forest together.
So the moment the red-haired mercenary spoke and approached, Dorothy became alert.
Especially the other person's unbridled gaze, constantly staring at Leonce, it was as if greed was written all over their face.
Since Elor already had a full supply of items, Dorothy chose to go directly into the swamp.
Seeing Dorothy walking so quickly, Elor guessed that Dorothy might have discovered something.
"Dorothy, why are you in such a hurry?"
Dorothy answered directly, "Didn't you think that strange mercenary's gaze towards you was a bit odd?"
Dorothy's question surprised Elor.
"Is your gaze strange? Quite a few people look at us like that normally."
Elor didn't know why Dorothy was so nervous just because of a glance.
Dorothy turned to look at Elor and Leonce.
Both of them are stunning beauties.
Elor possesses a delicate yet confident air.
Leonce perfectly embodies the image of a noble lady: elegant and aloof.
These two would certainly attract a lot of attention if they walked down the street.
Therefore, the two of them are slow to respond to eye contact.
Because of her past life and her heightened awareness of her surroundings after turning around, Dorothy is exceptionally sensitive to gazes.
She could sense that something was off about the mercenary, but Lyons and Elor found it unremarkable.
She assumed he was just another guy attracted to her beauty.
Dorothy didn't explain, but said in a deep voice, "The swamp is full of dangers, so be sure to stay alert at all times."
