Chapter 54 Finding Fault
Chapter 54 Finding Fault
Evan knew that the existence of Extraordinary Individuals was not a secret in aristocratic circles, so he nodded naturally.
Seeing that Evan had admitted he was an Extraordinary, Viscount Grelint was even more excited and deliberately lowered his voice to say:
"I wonder which path you took to become an Extraordinary Being. Is it a path possessed by the Horn family itself?"
Viscount Grelint's words made Evan frown, realizing that he had overlooked something. The Horn family had an extremely long history, almost as close as the nation itself. How could such a family not have a recipe passed down through generations?
However, Evan guessed that the potion recipes possessed by the Horn family were probably not from the 'Hunter' pathway, otherwise Robert would have given them to him directly.
Considering that the Augustan royal family followed the Judgement path, the Horn family, as its vassals, had a high probability of receiving the 'Arbitrator' and 'Lawyer' potion recipes as rewards.
Evan shook his head at Grelint, denying his guess, while Viscount Grelint, his excitement evident, cautiously asked:
"So, are you an extraordinary individual with the Pharmacist's Path? Do you have any Pharmacist's Path formulas?"
Grelint's question made Evan suddenly realize who the person in front of him was. He was the middleman who introduced Audrey, Fors, and Hugh, and who had been tirelessly pursuing the "Pharmacist's" potion recipe.
A thought struck Evan: he suddenly realized this person had some use, so he smiled and said:
"I am not an extraordinary person in the Pharmacist path, but I know where to find 'Pharmacist' potion recipes."
"Where?" Grylint asked impatiently, but seeing Evan smile without saying a word, he suddenly became clear-headed and said, "What do you want? I'll do anything I can for you."
Evan shook his head and said, "Actually, I don't know what to ask for. I'm not short of money. How about this: you owe me a favor, and I'll tell you how to get the 'Pharmacist' potion recipe."
Viscount Grelint actually preferred to pay money to repay a favor to Evan, because he knew that "favors" were harder to repay. However, he didn't want to give up the opportunity to obtain the potion formula he had been dreaming of. After much deliberation, he finally agreed.
In fact, Evan could have directly copied the "Pharmacist's" potion recipe from the "Lord of Mysteries" in his mind, but he didn't do so because he wanted to use this person to test the "Harvest Church" built in the southern district of the bridge, to see if Father Utravsky had developed serious psychological problems, and to see if he could make contact with him. If he could, it would be good news for Evan.
After all, Evan knew that Backlund would not be peaceful in the future. If he could contact Father Utravsky, it would greatly increase his sense of security. If something happened and he didn't have time to hide in the Church of the Night, he could run there.
"He is the chosen one of the Earth Mother Goddess, and I am the chosen one of the Night Goddess. We should communicate amicably, which can also promote the relationship between the gods behind us."
Evan had always been puzzled by the title "Crimson Lord" in the name of the Goddess of the Night, because it clearly belonged to the "Pharmacist Path" and was also a characteristic of the "Moon" Path.
Furthermore, in Russell's diary, Mr. Men explicitly stated that the goddess of the night represents "stars," and since the lunar pathway currently lacks sequence 0, this inevitably sparked Evan's imagination.
Moreover, even if Grelint fails to obtain the Pharmacist's recipe from the Harvest Church, it doesn't matter. Evan has prepared a second path for him, which is to travel from Tingen to Darkwell in Backlund soon.
Darkwell's "School of Life" practices a master-apprentice system. If Grelint can become an apprentice, then he might come into the sights of the "Mercury Serpent," who may have already arrived in Backlund, and might even be able to secure another round of investment.
Evan told Grylint about the "Harvest Church," which made Grylint somewhat conflicted. After all, he was not a follower of the Earth Mother Goddess, but rather a follower of the Night Goddess, and going to the church of other gods was still a bit of a psychological barrier for him.
Just as Grynt was struggling with his decision, several noblemen came up to him and greeted him, but it was clear that they were not there to see Grynt, but to cause trouble for Evan.
One of them looked at Evan with disdain and said:
"Sir, you've been dining here alone. Are you new here and don't have a dance partner? Would you like us to introduce you to one?"
Evan returned the look with disdain, slightly raising his chin as he sized up the insolent man, clicking his tongue twice, and said with feigned sympathy in his eyes:
"Given your appearance, it's understandable that you would have such a misunderstanding. Ugly people always judge others by their own standards, thinking that others are just as lacking dance partners as they are. Please have some self-awareness, restrain your inferiority complex, and don't flaunt it in front of others."
The nobleman's son, whom Evan sarcastically called "ugly," was actually not ugly at all, but compared to Evan, he paled in comparison, leaving Evan speechless, especially since Evan's tone was particularly infuriating.
So this man disregarded aristocratic decorum and was about to throw a punch, but was stopped by another blue-eyed nobleman. As he stopped his companion, this nobleman also taunted Evan:
"May I ask what rank you hold, that you would dare to attend this banquet and spout such nonsense?"
This statement, while seemingly sarcastic about Evan being a commoner, actually also implicates Evan's brother Robert, since Robert does not actually hold a title.
"I am a commoner without a title. I was only able to receive Earl Hall's invitation by chance, thanks to my brother's reputation for repealing the Grain Act last year. I am truly ashamed," Evan said with a sense of pride and 'humility'.
This statement left the other party speechless, because their family's income had been halved this year due to the repeal of the law, and they had even sold a batch of rare items to the Imperial Museum to maintain their "respectability".
Robert's blow was so devastating to some old nobles who relied on land rent for their livelihood that it made their so-called "noble superiority" seem utterly ridiculous, and his earlier sarcasm appear exceptionally comical.
The fact that Earl Hall personally greeted Robert before the banquet further demonstrated that Robert's actual influence could not be reflected by any noble title, a point that even Duke Negan acknowledged.
"Although Lord Wolf may have spoken inappropriately, he meant well in wanting to befriend you. Are you being too aggressive and disrespectful to us Backlunds? Do you want to isolate yourself from the Backlund noble circle?" Seeing his two companions speechless, the last person stepped forward.
Good heavens, Evan thought to himself, good heavens. With just a few words, they defined the previous provocation by the two as inappropriate speech, shifted the responsibility for the conflict to Evan, and finally raised a flag to threaten them.
This made Viscount Grelint, who had just met Evan, break out in a sweat. He wanted to stand up and smooth things over, but Evan showed no sign of softening his stance.
"Why do you come to me seeking validation? Everyone knows the answer without me saying it. Even the nicest clothes can't hide your ugly souls."
Your behavior seems childish and ridiculous to me, and is simply not worth mentioning.
As for your so-called self-isolation from your "circle," that's even more ridiculous. Can your so-called circle influence national policies or the power structure of parliament?
Earl Hall and Duke Negan are both nobles, but do you dare say you can influence them? Are they really in your circle? So what is it about you that I have to curry favor with you?
Evan's words were like a dagger, slicing away their glamorous exterior and belittling them to nothing, making them furious.
